Townes Van Zandt Picture
Townes Van Zandt(1944-1997) was a singer-songwriter, born in Texasto a life on the road. Van Zandt was master of the small, intimate folkperformance, such as the July 1973 show that became Live At The Old Quarter Houston, Texas, the double album on Tomato Records. As the Austin Chroniclewrites of the re-released CD, "Alone with a guitar, he hushes the crowd with his visionary tunes that are by turns haunting and eccentric, yet filled with beauty and dark shadows." Despite chronic battles with alcoholism and depression, his songwriting displayed a sense of humour and introspection, truth and beauty. Many artists cite Townes' influence on their music, with covers of his songs recorded by the likes of Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Jeffrey Foucault, Cowboy Junkies, The Be Good Tanyasand others. His son John T.

Goin’ Down To Memphis Lyrics

Townes Van Zandt

By townes van zandt
Goin down to memphis
Maybe get my ashes hauled
I can drive me a car
But I dont need no car at all
I beleive Ill ride that memphis cannon ball
She runs so fast
You cant catch her from behind
Ah, she runs so fast
You cant catch her from behind
But Ill be there waitin
For that little memphis girl of mine
Why I left
Guess Ill never know
Why I left
Man, I guess Ill never know
Sittin here thinkin
Im one dumb-ass so and so
Im headed back
That memphis train
She leaves real soon
The memphis train
Sound like she leaves real soon
Got nothin to guide me
cept the color of the moon
Hangin over memphis
Headed down
Where the mississippi runs
Boys Im headed home
Back where the mississippi runs
I hear theres some lovin there
Try to get me some
Headed down to memphis
Maybe get my ashes hauled
Just dont know
Why I ever left at all
Im gettin on that train, man,
I aint even gonna call
Be there fore the break of day
